Beer: Old Brown Dog Ale
Brewery: Smuttynose Brewing Company
State of Origin: New Hampshire
Style: American Brown Ale
If you prefer the hoppiness of IPA’s but want to venture out into malty territory, this is a great first step. The Old Brown Dog Ale is a blend of delicious malt and hoppy flavors. It was a very pleasant experience.
The beer smelled relatively strong and had a hazy brown with a reddish hue. The ale was carbonated, but not in an overbearing way. We noted it’s smoothness, creaminess, and lighter mouthfeel. There dominated a taste of brown sugar, with hints of chocolate and coffee. The slight hoppy bitterness balanced the flavors out.
Overall, the ale was pleasant to drink, as it was malty, hoppy, and sweet, but less heavy than porters or stouts.
Fun fact: In comparison to the English Brown Ale, Old Brown Dog is fuller-bodied and more strongly hopped.
