Grunion

Beer: GrunionDSC_0701
Brewery: Ballast Point
State of Origin: California
Style: Pale Ale
ABV%: 5.5%

Not a post about the fish, but about yet another delightful Ballast Point beer. In my opinion, it’s almost like the brewery can do no wrong. I’m not usually a fan of pale ales, but I was in the mood for something lighter and took a chance on Grunion. Bittersweet with a pleasant fruity (but not overbearing) taste reminiscent of clementines, the beer was pleasant to sip on and enjoy. Note: It tasted better straight from the can rather than a glass.

I always wondered why the Ballast Point beers are named for fish, so, I looked it up:

“…we named the beers after something many of us love almost as much as brewing—fishing. Today, many of the beers are named for fish or fishing terms, and the labels have fish on them as a reminder to always do what you love.” (Excerpt from: https://www.ballastpoint.com/how-it-began/)

Not a bad philosophy….

Cowcatcher Milk Stout

dsc_0484Beer: Cowcatcher Milk Stout
Brewery: Smartmouth Brewing Company
State of Origin: Virginia
Style: Milk Stout
ABV%: 5.5

Lightly carbonated, smooth, creamy. Light for a stout. Pleasant, lingering tartness. Very easy to drink. Slightly surprising for a 5.5% milk stout: although not overwhelming, there is definitely a smell and taste of alcohol, as with a stronger stout.

In case you didn’t know, this is a cowcatcher.

Last Leaf Maple Brown Ale

State of Origin: Virginia
Style: Brown Ale
ABV%: 6.1

Though it’s much too warm outside for October, it’s time to get into the spirit of autumn. I decided that, while I do enjoy many pumpkin-flavored foods, beer is not one of them. Thankfully, while it may seem like it, pumpkin beer is not the only fall “themed” beer. Starr Hill’s Last Leaf Maple Brown Ale is a sweet (literally) alternative. Slightly bitter, but mostly sweet, a pleasant maple-flavored beer of a beautiful dark reddish color. Nice to sip on slowly, but goes down relatively smoothly. I had it with a piece of cheesecake, but it’s sweet enough on its own.

Hoponius Union

hoponiuslemons Beer: Hoponius Union
Brewery: Jack’s Abby Craft Lagers
State of Origin: Massachusetts
Style: Indian Pale Lager
ABV%: 6.5

Sweet, slightly bitter light beer with an enjoyable aftertaste of hops. Citrusy with a sour taste in the back of the mouth. Hazy, light amber color. The 6.5% is surprising: it seems like a much lighter, very drinkable beer.

Hobo Life

State of Origin: Massachusetts
Style: Session IPA
ABV%: 4.50%

While on vacation in Massachusetts, I visited the awesome Craft Beer Cellar in Plymouth and scouted out a few local brews. One of the recommendations was Hobo Life, a session IPA that (despite the…unique name) turned out to be absolutely delicious.

This session IPA has a citrusy taste and hoppy aftertaste, but isn’t too sour. In fact, it’s (dangerously) thirst quenching. I’m usually not a fan of session beers, but this one hit all the right spots. It’s an enjoyable, citrusy, not overly complex IPA.
